CRM – Crew Resource Management
Type Ratings/FA
While more and more aircraft are flying more and more hours, the percentage of accidents caused by human error is constantly increasing. In the 1960s, the statistical proportion of accidents caused by “human error” was still around 50%; today it is around 80%. In the same period, however, accidents caused by technology and the environment fell in the statistics from around 20 to 30 percent to 10 percent or less. This means an increase of around 30% and more in the area of “human errors”.
The introduction of CRM courses at the beginning of the 1990s, in which Cpt. Michael Esser participated from the start, initiated a new trend. Crews were trained in psychology, people management with feeling, and communication with emotion, i.e. the Crew Resource Management course was developed.
Unfortunately, in our opinion, this global reorientation has not yet had the desired positive impact on accident statistics. One of the reasons is the rather random selection of trainers without prior aptitude testing. Frequently, pure psychologists who have never flown an airplane themselves have been and still are employed, which has caused all attempts at effective crew training to fail. For this reason, Captain Michael Esser took up and successfully completed training as a mental trainer. After all, safety in the cockpit starts with the mental strength of the pilots and their knowledge of the interaction between conscious and unconscious actions.
“What is crew resource management training?”
It is training in the effective use of all the rational and emotional resources available to us in order to achieve the maximum results of a team and company efficiently and safely.
What does this mean in detail?
It is the combination of all the competencies of human skills and the associated source of error – the “human factor” – to reduce or even eliminate it.
This is where our training and the resulting benefits for your company and team begin!
Through the transmission of human functioning, we create an understanding of our participants’ own abilities and the abilities of others.
Through the process of change towards better situational awareness, the participant’s source of error – the “human factor” – is reduced and leads to personality development and thus to the benefit of all!

“Human abilities?”
I am aware of that. I know what skills I have and I am aware of the skills of my employees / my team.
However, I’ll be honest with myself. There have been times when I couldn’t understand the reaction, behavior and working methods of one or other of my employees/team colleagues and wasn’t satisfied with their work results.
Let’s imagine it like this. Each and every one of us is like a fingerprint and has our own habits.
We have been shaped in our careers and as a result we all react differently to the same situation.
You know when the police have seven witnesses to an accident and each one tells a different story?
Only when we understand ourselves and the interplay of rational and emotional actions will we be able to better understand other people and their actions.
“How long does our Crew Resource Management Training seminar last?”
The first seminar lasts 2 working days.
It is held at a neutral location.
We recommend continuing this training for one day every year thereafter.
